These are the movies and TV shows US consumers have been most interested in over the previous month

It’s fair to say that Disclosure Day failed to meet expectations given its acclaimed director, top-tier cast and rather popular theme, hence its box office less-than-stellar performance. It’s a nice enough watch in streaming terms, though, so there. (Image: Universal)

Movie and TV show fans have never had it so good when it comes to the content options available for the consumer market: there are currently more than a dozen different streaming services delivering all kinds of movies or series straight to their TV sets, literally at the touch of a button. With that amount of new content being released every month, though, which films or TV shows are more likely to be worth each viewer’s precious time? Which movies or series are most people interested in knowing about?

That’s where JustWatch comes in. It’s a Web service designed to collect and present information on every film or TV show featured in practically all streaming services operating around the world today, in one place. Visitors can create a free account, pick their country of residence – content is often different in various regions – select the streaming services they are interested in and get recommendations based on their preferences and searches. Consumers can then use the JustWatch apps available for their Smart TV, streaming device, smartphone or tablet so as to always have new suggestions available on what’s hot on every streaming platform.

Based on user interest – as dictated by searches and recommendations – JustWatch is able to put together Top Ten charts of movies and TV shows across all streaming services operating in each country, every month. These are the films that consumers in the United States have been more interested in over the past few weeks.

Well, it was Halloween month after all, so of course more than half of this chart’s spots were claimed by thriller or horror films. Here’s hope that the November chart looks decidedly different – we mean it in the best possible way, Ryan, OK? (Image: JustWatch)

Based on the same information, these are the TV shows that consumers in the United States have shown the most interest in over the same period of time.

Established series had no trouble keeping a number of spots in this TV Shows Top Ten for themselves, sure, but horror-focused ones showed up too for Halloween October. Some of the latter are good enough to retain their spots during November too. (Image: JustWatch)

Taking a look at the JustWatch Top Ten Movies chart of last month makes one thing clear: truly good films have no trouble attracting interest for months on end, as Backrooms, Obsession and Project Hail Mary prove for yet another month. Predictably enough for a Halloween month, more than half of the chart’s spots were claimed by horror films, just as it should be, but Disclosure Day, Animals and The Invite still got a spot for themselves (despite actually being rather mediocre examples of their respective genres). It’s highly likely that next month’s chart will look decidedly different as a result.

When it comes to TV shows things were somewhat more balanced in October compared to September: sure, new seasons of established series got their spots – such as Slow Horses or The Diplomat – along with heavy hitters such as Lanterns, VisionQuest or East of Eden. But horror fans were not averse to the charms of Halloween October, as no less than four spots were claimed by thriller shows of some quality. Yours truly would not be surprised if some of the latter actually retained their spots in November despite a number of hot new shows coming up. We’ll just have to wait and see, yes?
