Both PS5 DualSense controllers get better Windows PC support

Not every single issue is resolved, but Sony’s new PlayStation Accessories app is a step in the right direction

With so many top PlayStation games finding their way to personal computers over the last few years, one would have thought that Sony’s DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers for the PS5 would be fully supported on Windows by now… and one would have been wrong, because they were not. The company took several steps in the right direction today, though, as there is now an official PlayStation Accessories application for Windows 10/11 which allows PC gamers to do a number of things not possible before, with both DualSense models.

First things first: DualSense Edge, Sony’s most advanced and kind of pricey PS5 wireless controller, is now properly recognized and supported on Windows PCs when updated to the latest version of its firmware. This can be done through the aforementioned PlayStation Accessories app (found on this official PlayStation website page). Most importantly, though, this app can now fully configure the DualSense Edge’s numerous inputs and save up to three different sets of settings – profiles, basically – in a manner that’s even easier than the one available through the PlayStation5 itself.

After configuring the DualSense Edge to their liking and saving their profiles of preference, PC gamers can take advantage of its features using a wired or wireless connection. As most consumers playing PlayStation games on PC are aware by now, not all games support all the additional features of the DualSense or the DualSense Edge – but that is up to developers, not Sony. The company’s first-party titles do support most or even all of this controller’s capabilities, although it seems that the same limitations imposed on the regular DualSense controller when used wirelessly (e.g. haptic feedback or adaptive triggers not working over Bluetooth) apply here too.

Talking about the regular DualSense model: it’s also recognized and supported by this new PlayStation Accessories application, so PC gamers can update the firmware of this controller too (as well as connect up to four such controllers at the same time on the same Windows machine now). There are no configuration options or profiles available for the regular DualSense, though, and not all features of this controller are usable either unless it is connected to a PC via a USB-C cable. At least consumers don’t have to resort to third-party apps (such as DS5Windows) anymore in order to use the DualSense controller with non-Steam PC games, which is something.

For reasons known to Sony and Sony alone, there are still features of the DualSense/DualSense Edge that PC gamers do not have access to when these controllers are used wirelessly in Windows 10/11. (Image: JEShoots.com, Unsplash)

Here’s hope that Sony will continue to improve the new PlayStation Accessories app and maybe look into how it could finally offer the missing features of both DualSense models in wireless mode (or release a wireless adapter offering full compatibility of either model with Windows machines). Come on, Sony, we can’t have PC gamers cable-tethered to their machines just because they’d like to enjoy your games to the fullest, now can we? 2025 is just around the corner!
