So it’s finally official… even if it may not be what Marvel fans wished to hear from Sony Pictures in April 2025. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third and final part of the acclaimed animated trilogy, is now scheduled to get its theatrical release on June 4, 2027. That’s no less than four years after the second part, Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse, was released. Considering that the first part, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was released in 2018, it will be almost a decade before we get to see how the story of Miles Morales plays out.

The first film of the trilogy won the hearts and minds of movie critics, comic fans and animation enthusiasts all over the world due to its well-written story, its unique look and groundbreaking audiovisual techniques that set it apart as a modern masterpiece. It won the 2019 Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, as well as the BAFTA, Hugo and Choice Critics awards of the same year amongst countless others. It introduced mainstream audiences to Miles Morales and the multitude of universes in existence, each one containing a different version of Marvel’s beloved web-slinger.

The second film expanded on the same lore, reuniting Miles with Gwen Stacy before they are both catapulted across the Multiverse on an adventure that would eventually pit Miles against almost every other version of Spiderman (not without good reason). The sequel also introduced The Spot, a minor villain who gradually evolves into a threat capable of destroying the entire Multiverse and is sure to come back for the third part of the trilogy. While Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse did not win as many awards as Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, it is just as enjoyable, setting up a number of interesting threads for Spider-man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Key plot details of the third film remain under wraps, but it will likely pick up where its predecessor left off: with Gwen Stacey and a few friends – including Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, Spider-Ham and Spider-Punk – setting off to save Miles Morales who’s trapped in the wrong universe and held captive by one of his own variants. In that universe there is no Spiderman and Morales has become The Prowler, so it will be interesting to see how this setup leads to the inevitable confrontation of the original Miles with Spider-man 2099 and The Spot.

Along with the film’s theatrical release date Sony Pictures shared a handful of images, some of which are featured in this story. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson, based on Phil Lord’s and Christopher Miller’s screenplay. Shameik Moore will return as Miles Morales/Spider-Man, as will Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker and Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’ Hara. The rest of the cast that’s confirmed at this time includes Jason Schwartzman as Dr. Johnathan Ohnn/The Spot, Kimiko Glenn as Peni Parker and Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar.
