It’s official: Get ready for the Spider-Verse Multi-Multiverse

Sony’s “Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse” trailer confirms multiple sequels, possibly multiple movies

Sony does not have at its disposal a whole army of superheroes to base a host of different movies and TV shows on like Disney does. But the one superhero that it does have, Spider-man, will apparently make use of to the max. The incoming Spider-man: No Way Home film will conclude the first trilogy of movies starring Tom Holland as the famous web-slinger in a few days (with another trilogy supposedly happening in the future), while Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, the amazing animated film that took the world by storm in 2018, was already known to be getting a sequel too. What we didn’t know is that Sony has even bigger plans for Miles Morales or, quite possibly, not just for that animated Spider-man.

Miles Morales is once more starring as the Spider-man coming from “a version of the Earth” different to our own, but other Spider-People will be coming back too. (Image: Sony)

The “first look” trailer that Sony released of Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse, as is the official name of the film, sets the stage for a number of Spider-men coming from different dimensions (as expected), but also notes that this will be “Part One” — so a third movie, “Part Two”, is obviously confirmed. It’s quite possible that the two films have already been broadly written as one and that work on both at the same time is well underway, with “Part One” scheduled for release in cinemas on October 7th, 2022.

Fans of Marvel comics will be glad to know that Spider-man 2099, the Spider-man from the future called Miguel O’ Hara, is indeed part of the new Spider-Verse animated movie. (Image: Sony)

This is the official synopsis of the film released by Sony: “Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered”. Make of that what you will, but the villain is most definitely not Spider-man 2099, which Miles is seen to be fighting with during the last few scenes of the trailer.

The new Spider-Verse animated movie employs the same quirky, unique, spectacular artistic style that helped its predecessor stand out in 2018. (Image: Sony)

Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron: Legendary Defender), Kemp Powers (One Night in Miami) and Justin K. Thompson (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs). It’s being written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) as well as David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). The sequel will of course see the return of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy. In addition to these returning characters, there will be some newcomers such as Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman and Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’ Hara/Spider-Man 2099.

Sony is most probably planning not just sequels for its successful Spider-man movies, but even separate films for some of their most popular characters, such as Spider-Gwen. (Image: Sony)

It’s quite clear that Sony is betting a lot on both the signature artistic style of these spectacular animated movies and the character of Miles Morales, which is extremely likable, relatable and unique in its own right. Let’s not forget that Sony has already invested much in Miles through two top video games for the PlayStation4 and PlayStation5. It’s no wonder that there have already been whispers about live-action film(s) getting produced with Miles Morales as the protagonist (Tom Holland even suggested as much in an interview). At the same time, there have been whispers about the animated Gwen Stacy getting her own feature film at some point (which would be extremely cool).

In other words: Sony is probably planning, long term, for a multi-Multiverse of live-action and animated films starring different Spider-men at different dimensions, timelines, you name it. It would make sense. Cross-overs between them are a no-brainer after that. You know what? If they are all Spider-man Into the Spider-Verse quality, that’s fine by us!
