As the ghost of E3s past haunts the beginning of every June now, gaming companies seem to at least honor that event’s memory by sharing some information about their plans in its traditional timeframe — well, at least Sony does, as it is already halfway into its Days of Play sales and the first one to make a few announcements in the form of a new State of Play event online. The Japanese warned us not to get our hopes up for news about its own blockbuster games coming down the line, but third-party developers got just the airtime they needed in order to give all PlayStation fans something to be excited about. No less than thirteen upcoming titles were announced and/or shown in the space of 30 minutes but the biggest surprise was the most important of all: Street Fighter 6 is officially on its way.
The newest member of Capcom’s celebrated franchise was properly unveiled — after the joke of a trailer that was shown in February — in a detailed video mixing gameplay footage, prerendered sequences and explanatory material. The title features a different art style (it’s based on Capcom’s own RE graphics engine), introduces several new mechanics, at least two new characters, real-time, tournament-like commentary and a strong single-player component. There are also new activities and game options, the choice between classic and simplified control schemes, as well as a networked area called Battle Hub, which is eerily similar to Sony’s PlayStation Home for the PS3.
Based on what this first SF6 trailer highlighted, Capcom is most probably going for the “game as a service” model this time around, stepping away from the Season Pass model of SF5. Players will seemingly be able to build their own fighter too and visit different areas of Metro City, which is obviously a first for the series. Street Fighter is also going multiplatform from day one for the first time ever, as it’s being developed for PS4/PS5, Xbox Series S/X (but not Xbox One S/X) and PC. It is currently scheduled for a 2023 release.
In the same State of Play event, Capcom also announced a PS5 Resident Evil 4 remake which will also feature PlayStation VR2 content (the same applies to Resident Evil: Village). Skydance’s Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 Retribution was also announced for PSVR2 (as well as for the current PSVR) and No Man’s Sky fans can look forward to PSVR2 content too (it’s not clear whether it’s the current NMS that’s being ported over or something completely different).
Other noteworthy tidbits: The Callisto Protocol looks deliciously scary in its new trailer and is currently slated for release on December 2nd, amazing action-adventure Tunic is coming to PS4/PS5 in September, Rollerdrome is a futuristic skater-shooter from OlliOlliWorld’s Roll7 and it’s coming to PS5/PS5 in August, while Stray (the impressive cyberpunk adventure starring… a cat) is coming on July 19 and will be free to PlayStation Plus subscribers for that month.
Sony itself had a few interesting pieces of information to share too. The company showed a proper trailer of Horizon: Call of the Mountain, its first official title for the PSVR2, and announced a generous update for Horizon: Forbidden West featuring new options and difficulty settings. Sony confirmed that PS5’s Spider-man: Remastered is coming to PC in August in upgraded form while Spider-man: Miles Morales is planned for release on PC at some point in 2022 (rumor has it that Returnal and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are also coming to PC but there’s still no official word on that). Is that a sign that the PS5 Demon’s Souls remake is in the cards, too? Not before Bloodborne, surely!
