Spider-man 2 coming to PC sooner than any other Sony AAA PS5 game

Insomniac’s megahit making the jump in just 15 months, out in January – but where’s the rumored PS5 DLC?

These days Sony seems perfectly capable of doing its own thing (even in an tone-deaf manner sometimes) and, at the same time, adjusting its plans based on market feedback. It’s just a matter of when it suits the company to do or not do something for consumers, really… and here’s the latest proof: Spider-man 2, Sony’s first true AAA exclusive for the PlayStation5, is coming to PC on January 30, 2025 via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

This is the company’s most successful PS5 exclusive so far (having sold anything between 13 and 15 million copies to date), yet Sony is bringing it to PC gamers just 15 months after its original release. Compared to, say, God of War: Ragnarok or Horizon: Forbidden West, both of which took around two years to make that jump, that’s a considerably shorter amount of time – even if it’s still not the “one year or less” window many industry analysts deem preferable for a number of different reasons.

According to the announcement post over at the official PlayStation blog, the PC port of Spider-man 2 is once again handled by Nixxes, the experienced studio Sony acquired with the express purpose of making these PS5-to-PC versions happen in a timely, quality-focused manner. That’s very good news for PC gamers, as Nixxes is responsible for most of the amazing PlayStation ports they got to enjoy over the last few years, including the original Spider-man and Spider-man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Ghost of Tsushima.

It’s worth noting that not all Sony PlayStation-to-PC ports have been handled well. The original Horizon: Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Part I for instance – or, most recently, Until Dawn – had their fair share of technical and other issues on release. They ended up needing more than a dozen patches each before reaching the state they should have originally shipped at, which is far from ideal.

Insomniac did not elaborate on the technical aspects of the PC port of Spider-man 2, but PC gamers can expect a wide range of display resolutions and aspect ratios, more control options as well as advanced raytracing effects. (Image: Sony)

The PC port of Spider-man 2 obviously features all the additions the PS5 version has received since October 2023 including fourteen new suits, the New Game Plus mode, Ultimate Levels, New Symbiote Suit Styles, Time of Day options, Post-Game Achievements, the Action Figure Mode in Photo Mode as well as the Screen Reader and Audio Description accessibility options. The Digital Deluxe Edition of the Spider-man 2 PC port features several bonuses, such as exclusive suits for Parker and Morales, early unlocking of items and suits or extra skill points.

As far as the PC port itself is concerned, Insomniac did not share details regarding the title’s technical improvements over the PS5 version or its system requirements. The company is expected to do so at some point in late December or early January, though, so PC gamers will have a pretty good idea about both well before its release.

Spider-man 2 is the latest Sony PlayStation AAA title making the leap to PC but the company has now run out of games to port across. Time for Gran Turismo 7 to make its grand entrance, then? (Image: Sony)

Something else worth noting: in the same PlayStation blog post confirming the release date of the Spider-man 2 PC port, Sony put all those rumors about new DLC content for the PS5 or the PC version of the title to rest. In the words of Insomniac’s senior community manager “the company has no additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2“, so it seems that the PC version of the game will be wrapping things up (the first Spider-man title featured three paid DLC episodes back in 2018).

To be fair, Insomniac has already got its hands full with the upcoming Wolverine title – and a number of unannounced X-Men games leaked during the server hack the company suffered last year – so it’s no surprise that it’s moving on from Spider-man 2. The only problem: Sony has almost run out of PlayStation games to release on PCs now. Maybe it’s finally time for Gran Turismo 7 for Windows to break cover, then?
